MAYROUBA, A CHARMING VILLAGE Mayrouba is located northeast of Beirut in the kaza of Kesrouan in Lebanon. Famous for its pleasant mild summers, it hosts a small population of an estimated 3,521 inhabitants and is renowned for its apples and water springs. The name 'Mayrouba'(Arabic for May: water and Rouba: pure) means 'pure water' in reference to the many potable water springs abundant in this small town. It has an altitude of 1,250 meters and is nested in Mount Lebanon (the Western Range of Lebanese mountains) facing the famous Mount Sannine to the east. The village subsists mainly from apple orchards. It is famous for its starking, Golden and Mouwashah apples. Mayrouba and other Mount Lebanon villages, account for 35% of apple production in Lebanon; the cluster is ranked second in Lebanon's North. The apple plantations are the third in terms of production area out of the total area planted with fruit trees. Mayrouba has an amphitheater, where festivals and carnivals are held several times a year. Historically, the village is famous for a battle that took place in the early 19th century between the Lebanese and the Army of Ibrahim Basha (the eldest son of Mohammed Ali, Governor of Egypt under the Ottoman Empire). The eroded, sculptured rocks on the surrounding hillsides were used as fortresses that helped the Lebanese to defeat Ibrahim Basha. |
